It is a beautiful morning here in Texas. Coffee in hand I sit on my yawning porch to look out over the bird sanctuary we began constructing nearly 16 years ago. Rain or shine, freezing cold or simmering heat, this is where my mornings start and evenings end. I am closer to God in my gardens than anywhere else on earth. When this upside world where good is called bad and bad is called good starts feeling like a pressure cooker, this is our retreat. For many years we have enjoyed a flurry of activity from our feathered friends. Hummingbirds chasing one another, claiming the entire garden as their territory in a beautiful dance as they race from feeder to feeder. Spring has treated us to a ring side seat as the male Cardinals preform their mating ritual of feeding seeds to their selected mate. Late spring brings juveniles who look more like an uncoordinated baby pterodactyl. The bird sanctuary was filled with chickadee’s, wrens, woodpeckers, painted buntings, doves, finches and hummingbirds. We would go through a 20lb bag of sunflower seed easily in a month. Niger thistle, safflower seeds, wild bird seed, peanuts, suet and cracked corn would be the buffet awaiting our feathered friends as they preformed in the theater of our sanctuary each day. Over the years we have added water features and plant life to attract not only birds but butterflies as well. My field guides are full of notes of which birds show up in the different seasons and when they arrive and depart.
If you’re a Birder, you know it can be an expensive hobby. With the prices of everything inflating to jaw dropping levels most folks are having a tough time feeding their families let alone the birds. In August of 2020 I no longer had to concern myself with the cost of supporting my birding habit. The birds were gone. After 12 years of generation after generation I had to add several feeders, and I still could not accommodate all our feathered visitors. I could hear bird songs in the distance but nothing like it had been. I would walk the property, found a few dead birds. Since August of 2020 we have a few birds at the feeders but for the most part the theater has closed.
Birdwatchers across the country are reporting a declining bird population. What is happening? Is it the cell towers that are going up everywhere? I have heard cell towers emit electromagnetic fields. Does it have to do with the replacing of the meters for our utilities. Surely not, after all they are supposed to be smart meters. I did a little research on wind turbines. Each year we would go to South Padre and each year there would be more and more windmills covering the landscape right in the migration path of the birds heading south for the winter. After visiting with a man who volunteered at a wildlife sanctuary outside Port Isabel, I did learn that these wind turbines located within a mile of homes were making people sick due to the constant hum. People are experiencing fatigue, migraines, vertigo and other illnesses. The closer the home was to a wind turbine, the lower their property value. As a Realtor I certainly understand this fact. Cornell University reported 2.5 billion birds from 12 families are gone. This report includes warblers, finches, blackbirds and sparrows. The Texas Christmas Bird count in 2020 showed the largest decline in birds in 14 years. Auburn.edu is reporting 67 million bird deaths each year due to pesticides used to increase agricultural production. It is also linked to the diminishing of our pollinators such as bees and butterfly’s.
Seems as if for everything there can be a blessing and a curse. In these times of uncertainty there is one absolute that gets me through my day. That is the fact that I serve at the pleasure of an Awesome God. My Creator created all life. I, like you, have been placed on this earth for such a time as this. There is so much that is out of our control dear friend, but our God is in control of everything. He has the final say. I will honor my Creator and care for His creation. I will continue to nurture my gardens and care for each visitor He sends my way. I will start my day with Him and I will end each day with Him. I will listen to His word as I sleep and prepare the garden of my heart.
Matthew 6:26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not reap or store away in barns and yet your heavenly Father feeds them all.
Refresh your mind, spirit & body by getting into nature as often as possible. Be a blessing to others.
